Kenosha’s water among nation’s best, according to utility manager

Category: Uncategorized

While many Midwest communities face severe challenges with water quality and leaden infrastructure, Kenosha’s water system is among the nation’s best, according to city officials.

“We are in full compliance with any safe drinking water standard. And I would say we’ve far exceeded in many, many categories,” said Curt Czarnecki, general manager of the Kenosha Water Utility.

The drinking water meets or exceeds all state and federal water quality standards.

The utility’s production plant on Simmons Island is named after O. Fred Nelson, who helped pave the way for Kenosha’s future growth through his emphasis on microfiltration decades ago.

The utility provides water and wastewater services to more than 100,000 people in the Kenosha area, including the City of Kenosha and the villages of Bristol, Pleasant Prairie and Somers.

Surface water from Lake Michigan has been the area’s source for drinking water since 1894.

“Having Lake Michigan as our source water is very beneficial,” Czarnecki said. “It’s got excellent water quality to begin with. And we have our state-of-the-art treatment equipment as well.”
