New-to-market coffee chain to anchor travel center in Somers
Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii will anchor a 19,000-square-foot travel center planned in the village of Somers.
The travel center is part of an overall 25-acre project the Somers Village Board approved a conditional use permit for over the summer. It includes the travel plaza – proposed with a gas station, convenience store and two restaurants – as well as a 107-room hotel that will feature the dual brands of Avid and Candlewood Suites.
Golden Oil Co., a petroleum wholesale and retail business that has its headquarters in Somers, is working with the village on a development agreement for the overall Somers Gateway Center project, according to Village Administrator Jason Peters.
Paul Bhardwaj, CEO and founder of Golden Oil, brings to the project more than 30 years of industry experience, in which he has witnessed “shifting consumer preferences and evolving amenities,” according to a press release. Because of customer expectations for speed and quality, he sought a coffee concept to anchor the new travel plaza.
“Coffee is an untapped market for us with massive potential,” Bhardwaj said. “For a travel plaza, it’s a natural fit, and being near three college campuses positions us perfectly to become a go-to coffee destination.”
Carthage College, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Gateway Technical College are all located nearby within Kenosha County.
